The College Recruiting Process

This is the way the college recruiting process works for 95% of large companies:

1. Pick 30 schools that you think have smart students.
2. Call the career service offices and tell them you are hosting an information session in the Fall.
3. Present a ppt on your company and the career opportunities. Give out key chains.
4. Post jobs through career service offices.
5. Collect student resumes.
6. Eliminate the resumes with a 3.2 GPA or below.
7. Go to campus and interview students.
8. Get on a conference call and talk about the students.
9. Extend offers.

Is this fair? Probably not, but who cares, it’s what happens.

Does this generate the best young people working for your business? No. It generates the best students with a minimum 3.2 GPA from schools ranked well by magazines who are able to talk confidently for two hours.

I would love to talk to the person who thinks this is the way to find the very best young innovators. Call me – 202.431.7509 – we’ll argue. If you are not going to call me, for the love of your company, stop recruiting like this.

Both companies and students deserve better. It’s time.

    Couldn’t agree more, Ted. The system is ludicrous. I did not go to a “top 30″ school but I worked my tail off and did well. I have had to earn everything I have ever gotten, and I strongly feel that I would be an asset to many companies. However, it has been a harsh reality that because I did not go to Harvard, I can not even get an interview.

    Long story, short, I will not be calling to argue with you, Ted. You go boy!
